It’s that time of the year when trends and predictions for what one can expect in the New Year are popular. In that vein, in December, global PR agency Ketchum conducted a survey of nutrition experts around the world to understand what topics, ingredients and dishes would shape the year ahead in food.
Ketchum surveyed 176 nutrition professionals across North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia who are on the frontlines working with consumers and observing shifts in food trends and behaviors first-hand. With the help of these experts they identified macro trends that cross borders as well as spot micro trends that have taken root in one region and have the potential to emerge in other regions.
The experts #1 prediction for 2017? That sustainability will take center stage!
Some stats on sustainability from the Ketchum report about sustainability:
- 67% and 56% of nutrition experts believe more consumers will be looking for “locally sourced ingredients” and “organic” on food labels, respectively, in 2017.
- 64% believe food sustainability (e.g. environmental sustainability and sustainable sourcing) will increase in importance in 2017.
- 51% believe sustainability in dietary guidance will become more of a focus for consumers in the new year.
- 68% believe managing food waste will be more important to consumers in 2017.
AS such, Ketchum advises to watch for these trends in 2017:
- Increased efforts to reduce food waste in business and at home.
- Food waste prevention becomes a priority in foodservice and at retail, with initiatives to educate employees and technologies to increase shelf-life.
- Consumers begin implementing their own waste management practices at home and evaluating prospective purchases based on food and packaging waste.
A composting solution to reducing food waste
As can be seen from the above, reducing food waste is becoming more and more important. TIPA’s vision is that compostable flexible packaging can be treated in the same way as organic food waste, and so become a part of the same solution to address food waste – composting.
“Waste is 30% household waste. The biggest problem is kitchen waste, is food waste. Governments and municipalities have to take care of the kitchen waste. Once the kitchen waste is taken care of, you can implement composting through the same infrastructure, the same waste infrastructure,” says Daphna Nissenbaum, TIPA’s co-founder and CEO.
“This is our vision,” continues Daphna. “Our vision is that flexible packaging will be treated the same way as organic waste, the same way as kitchen waste. We focus on flexible packaging because rigid packaging can be recycled. Flexible packaging cannot be recycled. This is the right recycling system for flexible packaging.”
Trade shows to attend
Which trade shows offer the best opportunity to see organic innovation firsthand? If you are in Europe, BIOFACH in Germany is highly recommended. If you are in the United States, then the Natural Products Expo West is a “do not miss.”
The best place to get an early New Year look at organic food and non-food innovation is BIOFACH – the world´s leading trade fair for organic products which takes place in Nuremberg, Germany from 15 – 18 February 2017.
BIOFACH is the place where people have shared their passionate interest in organic food since 1990. In 2017, more than 2,300 exhibitors from the national and international organic sector are expected at BIOFACH 2017.
Organic is more than a label or certification. Organic stands for quality and conviction and for the responsible use of nature’s resources – which is why TIPA will be an exhibitor at this important event.
TIPA’s packaging is just as transparent, durable and impermeable as ordinary plastic packaging, and it works for dry, baked and frozen goods, as well as fruits and vegetables. TIPA’s packaging solutions offer uniquely low haze and high transparency films with excellent strength and sealing properties.
We will be exhibiting our full range of packaging at BIOFACH 2017 – including our 100% compostable bio-based films, laminates, pouches and our new re-closable Tiplock TM bag! If you are attending BIOFACH, do visit us at Booth 150 in Hall 4!
