Interpack 2017, the world’s largest trade fair for the packaging sector and related process industries, achieved a record attendance of 2,865 companies and 170,500 visitors from May 4-10 in Düsseldorf. The good news for exhibitors? 75% of these visitors were reported to be decision-makers. “interpack is an absolute must-go event for companies in this industry and provides unique momentum. Every three years it is not only a one-of-a-kind performance showcase but also the place where suppliers and customers from all over the world get together to network and do business,” noted Friedbert Klefenz, president of interpack 2017.

TIPA participated in the Composite Material Made From Plastics Category at interpack, showcasing the company’s award-winning innovative flexible packaging solutions. These solutions offer similar  properties as conventional plastic packaging – just as transparent, durable and impermeable – but with a compostable solution. This means that TIPA packaging can be disposed along with food waste – returning to nature with no harmful impact on the environment.

Collaboration with Jindal Films Europe announced

The TIPA highlight of interpack 2017 was without a doubt the announcement of the agreement with Jindal Films Europe for the co-development of novel bio-based, compostable high barrier films. This unique collaboration will address mainly the multi-material/ laminate market where viable reuse or recycling pathways are not available. The intention is to create novel, affordable and state of the art films which serve both the sophisticated functional needs of the high barrier, extended shelf life food packaging industry – while offering an easily disposable/organically recyclable end-of life solution.

“The collaboration between the two technology groups will enable, for the first-time ever, mutual research resulting in new bio-based, compostable high barrier films for a wider range of applications,” said Dr. Yifat Bareket, TIPA’s CTO. “The collaboration will ensure innovative, barrier and compostable films, not currently available for multipurpose packaging applications, are brought to market to meet the demand for solutions that are both durable and environmentally-friendly.”

“This partnership and joint development is aligned with our long-term strategy to expand with new polymers and film structures, and bring sustainable solutions to the industry,” added Dr. Pascale Wautelet, Jindal Films Global Technology Director.

“We will be the first to offer sealable barrier film,” added Eli Sachs, TIPA’s vice president commerce. “Highly functional sealable barrier film that is more versatile, and that has the dual purpose of sealing flat barrier film onto a single film. Think about it – instead of layering film onto a barrier and a printing layer, you will have one dual purpose layer that will both seal and create that barrier. The only thing you will need to add is the printing layer. So instead of 3-ply laminate, you will have a 2-ply laminate.”

Both companies bring unique expertise and experience to the partnership which will enable a collaborative approach to innovation. TIPA, who recently scooped the Silver award at the internationally renowned Edison Awards for its innovative flexible packaging solutions, will apply its seven years of experience developing high-end, bio-based compostable films. Jindal Films Europe, who recently joined the CEFLEX project (Circular Economy for Flexible Packaging), will contribute its superior specialty technology in coating films to create diverse barrier films suitable for a wide range of market applications.

New level of traction

The TIPA team consensus was that interpack was an excellent event and one which more than delivered on the promise of being THE packaging industry event, and of gaining momentum for exhibitors. The TIPA stand was packed from day one. The nearby location of the Jindal Europe stand also allowed much “cross-pollination” to occur – with a constant stream of people coming over to TIPA from Jindal’s booth. According to the TIPA team, these visitors included “hundreds of sales people, and scores of customers.”

“We got a new level of traction at interpack,” commented Elzaphan Hotam, TIPA’s vice president sales. “Mostly from Europe – from brands to converters and distributors – we got a huge selection. There is a growing interesting in the technology and in sustainability.”
