A Plastic Planet introduces PlasticFreeLand at Olympia London’s Packaging Innovations Show

Picture a plastic-free shopping experience. What does it look like? This was the challenge campaign group A Plastic Planet set for themselves in the design of PlasticFreeLand™ – a concept shortly to be unveiled at the Packaging Innovations Show at Olympia London. Among those on display will be compostable flexible food and drink packaging by TIPA, water and grease-resistant cardboard pop-up boxes – ‘REELtrays’ – by Reel Brands, and Maistic household products made from bio-materials.

Finding new solutions for packaging materials that are biodegradable and sustainable is all the rage these days, not only in the food industry but the entire consumer products space, as the plastic crisis becomes ever more acute. Last month, we reported on 25 startups sustainable packaging tech solutions, including TIPA, an Israeli startup offering compostable packaging. Rethinking food packaging can dent the plastic pollution crisis

TIPA has created a new packaging technology that is fully biodegradable in both industrial and home composting. It promotes its technology as an alternative to conventional flexible packaging, such as candy bar wrappers and coffee bean bags. Flexible packaging is generally not recyclable. TIPA asserts its packaging is as good as conventional flexible packaging in terms of shelf life, durability, sealing strength, printability and flexibility.

Packaging Innovations London 2019 | Plastic-free area makes debut

The packaging industry’s most contentious topic – sustainability – is set to be the focus of a new feature at the London event. TIPA was one of the companies at the event and demonstrated the capabilities of its fully compostable flexible packaging. The bio-based concept offers similar mechanical and visual properties associated with conventional, flexible plastic options, including transparency, sealing strength, durability, barrier capabilities and shelf life, but is fully compostable within six months.
