For Karma, TIPA’s Compostable Packaging Was the Natural Choice

For Irish-brand Karma, eating right and living right go together. So, when it came to packaging, compostable packaging was their natural choice.

“Our motto is East Right. Live Right,” explained Declan Gannon, founder and Co-owner of Shanvalley Innovative Food Company Limited, the owner of the Karma Brand.

“Eat Right – Eating right will ensure that your body can reach and maintain a healthy weight. It will help cells reproduce and fight off chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes and thus helping you to maintain a more active lifestyle. Also, a healthy body leads to a healthy mind!”

“Live Right – It is important that we acknowledge and try to reduce our carbon footprint,” he continued. “The ecosystems that help to keep us all alive are in danger due to man-made pollution and carbon emissions. We can all do our bit to help, and here at Karma, we aim to reduce ours by using bio-degradable, compostable and recyclable packaging. We are continuously working on our ‘Sustainability Action Plan’. This plan highlights areas in where we leave a footprint, highlights measures to reduce that footprint and time frames in which to do it.”

Choosing compostable packaging

Karma wanted the packaging for their products to be as healthy as the products themselves. “We’re a health food company,” said Declan. “We came up with the idea of doing healthy packaging, packaging that would be healthy for the environment, which led us onto the compostable wrapper.

“As we continue to expand our range of healthy foods, we want it all to be in eco-friendly packaging,” declared Declan passionately. “We have two great tasting healthy product ranges now – granola bars that are gluten free, high in fiber and full of natural energy and raw fruit and nut bars that are free from gluten, wheat and dairy and no added sugar – which are both using the compostable wrappers supplied by TIPA.”

For Karma, a compostable packaging is the way of the future. “I think it’s the way that things are going to go,” said Declan. “Plastic is causing a lot of problems on the planet right now, it is estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the sea.” I think we’re ahead of the game with the compostable wrapper, which is why a month ago, we started converting all our packaging into a compostable packaging.”

Business is blooming

According to Declan, the consumer response to the Karma products and packaging has been overwhelmingly supportive. “Last week we launched our raw fruit and nut bar and relaunched the granola bar at a big festival in Ireland called Bloom. It’s something like the Chelsea Flower Show if you want to kind of compare it to something,” he said.

“Bloom is getting bigger and bigger each year – there are a 120,000 people there over five days. Our products and our packaging got a huge reception,” Declan continued. “I mean the … the enthusiasm and response from the consumer were amazing, and feedback was just fantastic. It really showed us that we’re on track and on point with what we’re trying to do.”

“It’s fantastic that TIPA has the technology to produce compostable wrappers, and using compostable packaging is a really good thing we can do, and it is something our customers want,” he concluded.
