HaPPE Earth: Closing the Loop on Single-Use Healthcare PPE

You’re looking at a ten-minute interaction, and 50 years in landfill, for a splash apron.

Co-founder and CEO of HaPPE Earth

Single-use personal protective equipment is essential in healthcare, but it creates a significant waste challenge. HaPPE Earth developed a circular system that combines certified compostable PPE supplied by Bio4Pack, powered by TIPA, with on-site processing to turn used products into a soil enhancer instead of sending them to landfill.

Founded by healthcare professionals in Ireland, HaPPE Earth was created to address a problem its team had experienced firsthand. Healthcare workers rely on disposable aprons, hairnets, shoe covers, and other protective products every day. These products play a critical role in infection control, but most are made from conventional plastic and have no responsible end-of-life solution.

The scale of the challenge is substantial. Europe’s healthcare sector generated more than 900,000 tonnes of single-use plastic in 2023. For patient-facing items and general PPE that cannot be reduced, reused, or effectively recycled, HaPPE Earth recognized the need for a different approach.

The company set out to create protective products that could meet the performance and safety requirements of healthcare environments while supporting a circular waste system. The solution needed to go beyond replacing the material. It also had to provide a practical way to collect and process the products after use.

Bio4Pack became a key partner in bringing this vision to life. The company supplies HaPPE Earth with certified compostable splash aprons and waste bags designed to perform during use and enter HaPPE Earth’s dedicated processing system afterwards.

The compostable splash aprons provide the fluid resistance, strength, and reliability required in clinical settings. They are also more breathable than conventional alternatives, supporting comfort for healthcare professionals throughout their shifts.

The partnership provides HaPPE Earth with access to Bio4Pack’s expertise in certified compostable materials and products. This is particularly important when introducing new solutions into healthcare procurement systems, where product performance, compliance, and supplier credibility must all be demonstrated.

“I think together we actually make a powerful couple,” says Dr Mary O’Riordan.

HaPPE Earth completes the loop through an on-site closed-vessel bio-digestion system. Used compostable PPE and other compostable items are collected alongside food waste, then processed at the location where the waste is generated. The system converts the materials into a pathogen-free soil enhancer while reducing the volume of waste sent to landfill.

This integrated model gives healthcare providers a complete solution, from certified compostable PPE and collection bags to processing and measurable reporting. Instead of becoming long-term plastic waste, products designed for a short period of use are given a responsible end of life.

The response from healthcare workers has been immediate. Many described the compostable aprons as “guilt free,” knowing that the products they use every day can be processed through a circular system rather than remaining in landfill.

HaPPE Earth’s model is already operating in healthcare environments, demonstrating that certified compostable products can support both clinical requirements and institutional sustainability objectives. The company is also exploring applications in pharmaceutical manufacturing, food production, hospitality, construction, and other sectors that depend on single-use protective products.

Together, HaPPE Earth and Bio4Pack are demonstrating how material innovation and dedicated end-of-life infrastructure can transform an unavoidable waste stream into part of a circular system. What begins as essential protection can return to the soil, leaving no lasting plastic waste behind.
