For over five generations cheese artisan Maser Formaggi has been successfully meeting its customers’ needs with tasteful and aromatic freshly grated products made of the best-aged cheese.
Whether grated, sliced, or slivered, all their products are packed in Freshness Seal packaging to assure flavor, quality, and better storage capabilities. But as more and more brands incorporate sustainable packaging solutions into their business, Maser also aimed to produce less plastic to protect the environment and their sustainability in production. They decided to take a different approach with their aged hard Gran Maser 100% freshly grated cheese line.
In collaboration with SDR PACK and TIPA, Maser chose compostable pillow bags made of TIPA 302 and laminated by SDR PACK, heat-sealed and suited for processing on their current packaging machines. Their chosen compostable bags can also preserve “live” and moist products such as grated cheese which makes a perfect match for Maser’s product quality and haute cuisine ethos.
“The challenge was to pack freshly grated cheese while preserving its taste, aroma, and shelf-life”, explains Federico Basso, Purchasing Manager at Maser Formaggi, “In terms of production, all we needed was a simple configurational alternation to our packing machine and once the word got out that we are going sustainable with this line, consumers reacted very positively with excitement and curiosity. No doubt this made us proud to be amongst the first to pack grated cheese in compostable bags.”
To secure sustainability on other production lines under their brand name, Maser Formaggi has launched compostable packaging for the foodservice sector and intends to extend the use of compostable solutions to retail distribution as well.
